SUMMARY:Quo Fish
DESCRIPTION:London-based Pearl Fish and Rob Quo are two talented singer songriters performing as Quo Fish. They are visiting Appledore\, North Devon as part of their spring 2024 tour. \nThe Champ is honoured to have such a talented duo perform on their fabled north stage. \nPearl Fish is an intimate and warm musician. Her sound\, honed from playing with the finest musicians\, is simultaneously melancholic and full of hope. She is reminiscent\, at times\, of Suzanne Vega. \nRob Quo’s contemporary folk songwriting is emotive and humorous in equal measure\, touching on the human experience with lyrical grace and a melodic simplicity which is uniquely his own. \nGive them a huge welcome to the Champ on Thursday 11 April.

SUMMARY:Karen Sharp with the Craig Milverton Trio - presented by North Devon Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:A several-times winner of the British Jazz Awards for best tenor saxophonist and a key member of the late Humphrey Lyttleton’s band appears at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 15 April. The musician is Karen Sharp who plays baritone as well as tenor saxophones and who will appear with the Craig Milverton Trio. \nA busy musician on the festival and club circuit\, Karen plays saxophone in a way which harks back to the effortless\, swinging styles of Zoot Sims or Al Cohn rather than the more impassioned approach of John Coltrane. Writing in The Observer the critic Dave Gelly described her sound as ‘warm and full\, her improvised lines bold and clear and her compositions full of surprises’ while Downbeat Magazine commented that ‘Sharp loves melody\, whether composed or improvised\, as reflected in her relaxed and natural phrasing” \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. Thank you NDJC. There is no entrance fee\, however a collection is taken for the band. For a meal booking please phone The Beaver on 01237 474822

SUMMARY:LunaBarge
DESCRIPTION:Buckinghamshire-based Lunabarge are doing a mini-tour of Devon and Cornwall – the Cream Tea Excursion tour. Which reminds us of the Devon-Cornwall rock festival a few years back. It was cancelled at the last minute. Cream and the Jam were down as headliners but the organisers couldn’t agree which should go on first. \nLunabarge are double stomping upbeat indie-folk with catchy original songs. Catch them at the Champ on Thursday 18 April.

They’ll be performing their madcap Scrumpy & Western music at the Palladium Club on Lower Gunstone\, supported by Somerset reggae-funk-hip-hop collective Monkey Bizzle. \nThe gig will also be doubling up as a mini cider festival\, with real ciders on offer from local producers such as Green Man in Barnstaple. \nFor the uninitiated\, Skimmity Hitchers blend razor sharp parodies and original material with a raucous stage show and spontaneous audience interaction. And of course Baz\, their legendary dancing badger! \nThey have performed at hundreds of venues\, festivals and cider sheds\, toured with West Country legends The Wurzels and and also preached the cider gospel as far as France\, Germany and North America. \nAdvance tickets are £10 plus fee and available online from https://www.wegottickets.com/thepalladiumclub. SUMMARY:Anita O'Day Tribute - presented by North Devon Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:American singer Anita O’Day’s unique sound and swinging rhythmic sense put her in the upper echelon of jazz singers\, as skilful with ballads as with scatting and liberal interpretations of standard songs. \nAnita’s career spanned the late swing and bebop eras\, inspiring many singers who followed her. Bristol-based Lucy Moon is just one of these singers and on 29 April she will perform a tribute to the great lady with her quartet at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore. Lucy will not just perform O’Day’s songs but also relate stories about the great vocalist’s “hard times and high times” and the jazz greats she collaborated with along the way. \nTo see Lucy Moon in action performing Anita O’Day\, check out this YouTube video. Or come along to the Beaver on 29 April. \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. Thank you NDJC. There is no entrance fee\, however a collection is taken for the band. For a meal booking please phone The Beaver on 01237 474822
