DESCRIPTION:WORLD-CLASS TRUMPETER AT THE BEAVER \nByron Wallen\, a musician described by Jazzwise Magazine as ‘one of the most innovative\, exciting and original trumpet players alive’\, will appear at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on Monday 1st September with the Craig Milverton Trio.\n Byron was born in to a musical family and after learning piano and euphonium at an early age he went to New York to study trumpet with such American  greats as Donald Byrd and Jimmy Owens. Byron then started a glowing musical career\, playing with Courtney Pine and Jean Toussaint and many American musicians\, including David Murray\, Billy Higgins\, Wynton Marsalis and George Benson.\nByron has visited many countries in the world to perform with local musicians\, especially in countries of Africa. As a writer he has composed scores for film and theatre and as an educator he holds several teaching posts including at London’s Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. DESCRIPTION:AWARD-WINNING JAZZ SINGER AT BEAVER \nAward-winning jazz singer/pianist Liane Carroll makes an annual visit to the The Beaver\, Appledore on 29 September.\nVoted several times as the UK’s best jazz vocalist Liane sings every song as though she owns it. DESCRIPTION:JOYFUL JAZZER AT BEAVER \nItalian alto and soprano sax player\, Tommaso Starace\, makes a welcome return with his trio to North Devon Jazz Club at The Beaver\, Appledore on 13 October. \n Tommaso has a sparkling\, joyful approach to his music\, a characteristic identified by Italian critic Vittorio Franchini\, writing that “his sax is filled with voices\, it sings of gaiety”’ while the Oxford Times commented “‘Anyone who has experienced a glissando of language on the streets of Italy will understand the utter exuberance with which Italian-born Starace attacks and runs with the language of music.” \nTommaso has worked with many top UK\, Italian and US jazz musicians\, including Billy Cobham and Dave Liebman. Following his love of film and photography he has worked with film composer Dario Marianelli to record music for a TV production of This Little Life and recorded an album interpreting the photographs of Italian photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin. To extend his talents\, Tommaso has recorded Bach’s Cello Suites on soprano saxophone in six UK churches. \n Joining  Tommaso will be Martin Jenkins on Hammond organ and Pip Harborn on drums and they will play a programme of standards and contemporary jazz. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. SUMMARY:Wren Music Presents: Shore To Shore
DESCRIPTION:In the 19th century\, many people based in Appledore emigrated to Newfoundland\, setting up communities that fished cod and built ships from the plentiful timber. Shipping companies offered cheap passage from North Devon and the prospects were better than staying behind. \nMusic played a large part in those rugged communities that formed in Newfoundland\, and much of this music was rooted in Devon folk songs. \nThe folk singer\, songwriter and musician Jim Payne direct from Newfoundland is playing around Devon in a series of four ‘Shore to Shore’ folk concerts\, including Appledore on 30 October\, presented by Wren Music \nAs well as being one of the province’s most prolific songwriters\, Jim is also a leading performer\, collector and producer of traditional Newfoundland music. Jim will be joined by our very own Marilyn Tucker and Paul Wilson to present a concert exploring the links between Devon and Newfoundland. Expect hearty choruses\, stomping tunes\, poignant ballads and a whole lot of history – and probably some display dancing! Instruments will include 4-stop melodeon\, guitars\, accordions and tambourine. The concerts are in Appledore\, Teignmouth\, Barnstaple\, and Crediton\, with an additional short appearance at the Wren Folk Club in Okehampton. SUMMARY:Howl Quartet - presented by North Devon Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Taking its name and inspiration from an Alan Ginsberg poem entitled Howl\, the Howl Quartet will play  a gig at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver Appledore on 10th November. \nFormed in 2017 and led by the saxophonists Harry Brunt and Dan Smith the quartet emphasises storytelling through melodic composition and improvisation. Reviewing the band’s album Airglow UK Vibe called it a “diverse\, dynamic and richly rewarding listen’ and stated that ‘Airglow is a great example of how jazz in the 21st century is well and truly alive and kicking” while Jazzwise wrote “Often beguiling…an assured statement of identity from a band that has very much found its feet.”

DESCRIPTION:TOP-FLIGHT JAZZ TRUMPETER AT THE BEAVER \nTop-flight trumpeter Bruce Adams is special guest at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 24 November. He will join superb saxophonist Martin Dale and quartet to perform an evening of fiery bop-based jazz. \nBorn in Glasgow Bruce Adams is a veteran of the UK jazz scene. Given a trumpet at 11 years he was performing his first gig within a few months. There followed a diverse career\, ranging from a winning appearance on Opportunity Knocks\, a spell in Canada\, work on the QE2 and gigs with big bands which led to him winning the best soloist prize in the BBC Big Band Competition. \nBruce has played all over the world with such jazz greats as Benny Carter\, Buddy Tate and Bob Wilbur and he has won the UK Top Trumpet prize three times. Writing in The Daily Telegraph critic Martin Gayford commented that “Adams performs with boppy zip and\, when appropriate\, a nice\, dirty low down feeling”. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club.
