DESCRIPTION:Dave Storey has established himself as one of the leading drummers and first call sidemen on the London jazz scene. He is well known for his big sound on the drums and for his work as a bandleader. Dave will bring his star studded trio to North Devon Jazz Club at The Beaver\, Appledore on 10 June to play contemporary straight-ahead jazz marked by a high degree of interplay and understanding between the musicians\, a relationship developed through several years of playing and touring together.. To quote London Jazz News audiences can expect ‘ ‘Twisty trips around post-bop topography\, fuelled by high-octane virtuoso drumming’. \nJoining Dave will be two multi-ward winning musicians: saxophonist James Allsopp (‘perhaps the most gifted British saxophonist of his generation’ to quote Underscore Music Magazine ) and double bassist Conor Chaplin of whom UK Jazz News commented ‘He has a wonderful capacity to communicate the joy of having just landed on a new idea\, a texture\, line\, a rhythmic kick\, to produce endlessly the sound of surprise.’ \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. They will be playing music from their recent well-received album entitled And The Birds Were Set Free. Despite his great skill on the guitar\, he is a humble man who loves fishing with his dog for company. He has toured much of Europe and the States captivating audiences with his intimate folk/blues style. \nSoftly spoken\, Jim has for years has been revered among professional musicians as a consummate finger picker and slide guitarist. He also has a great voice that belies his appearance.

The band have been regulars at Glastonbury\, Boomtown\, Electric Picnic\, Eden Festival in Scotland and Beautiful Days\, plus many more around the UK and Europe. Encompassing stride and barrelhouse piano styles of the 1920s through to the great New Orleans piano players like Professor Longhair\, Fats Domino\, and Dr John and James Booker\, and mixing in some Soul-Jazz\, Gospel\, and original compositions\, Tim\, together with his long time musical partner\, Chris Proctor\, will take you on a magical journey back to a time when music formed the soundtrack to the 20thCentury.  \nChris and Tim have played as a duo at the Green Note Basement Bar in Camden since it opened in 2014\, and have also held down a once a month residency at London’s premier cocktail bar –Nightjar for the last 9 years. More recently they have become regular performers at Ronnie Scott’s Upstairs Bar Voodoo Night Sessions. \nSophie Smiles joined Dorris Henderson’s Eclection and later formed the Voodoo Revue with Tim\, Chris and other regular cohorts of the notorious New Orleans jam night in Denmark St\, London. Accompanied by excellent local talent\, Jim Blofield on Drums and Emmanuel Segan on Sax\, it’s set to be a great night of barrelhouse blues and roots music.

DESCRIPTION:All aboard the good ship Black Friday – join her crew and captain Tom for another stormy crossing of the Celtic sea of folk-punk. We don’t know where we’re going and we don’t know when we’ll get there but we’ll have some fun along the way… \nThe six strong\, unstoppable Black Friday play a foot-stomping mix of high energy\, home-brew folk-punk and Celtic tunes\, travelling across Cornwall and lands far beyond. They have had crowds jumping at some of Europe’s biggest festivals\, including Glastonbury\, Boomtown\, Donau-insel fest and Electric Picnic. They have recorded a live BBC session at Maida Vale Studios and broken a Guinness world record – 30 gigs in 12 hours! \nTheir music is influenced by their Irish and Cornish roots and their folk heroes. Catchy original songs and take on folk favourites by the likes of Flogging Molly and Pogues will keep you dancing all night. \nThe Appledore Festival Ceilidh Band will be providing support. DESCRIPTION:Crawford\, Gilkes and Smiles is a talemnted trio serving up a musical gumbo of blues\, Louisiana funk and jazz. It’s members are Jim Crawford on guitar\, Sophie Smiles on keyboards and bass\, and Tom Gilkes on drums. \nSophie Smiles is a talented pianist and bassist who lives in Westward Ho! She learnt to play from listening to the great New Orleans piano master Dr John and often gigs around Appledore. She plays honky tonk and Southern funk and blues\, always looking like she loves to play more than anything else. Her warmth and enthusiasm is catching. \nJim Crawford is one of the best-known musicians in the Appledore area. Originally from Lancashire\, he now resides in the heart of Appledore. Despite his great skill on the guitar\, he is a humble man who loves fishing with his dog for company. He has toured much of Europe and the States captivating audiences with his intimate folk/blues style. \nTom Gilkes has been playing drums since the age of 12. He studied at The British and Irish Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) in Bristol and turned professional when he was 20. He’s toured all over the UK and Europe with artists such as Marc Ford (The Black Crowes) and recorded in the studio with Brian Banks (Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album) and Clint Murphy (Manic Street Preachers). In addition to being a fully qualified Yamaha drum teacher\, Tom has studied with world reknowned drummers such as Dave Weckl (Chick Corea\, BB King)\, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and Dave Dicenso (Berklee College Head of drums\, USA)\, and has worked for both Rhythm magazine and Drummer magazine.

DESCRIPTION:YOUNG JAZZ STARS AT THE BEAVER \nTomorrow’s New Quartet appears at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore  on 14 October and will showcase some of the UK’s young jazz stars. \nBand leader and drummer Rod Oughton was described by Jazz Journal as having’ established himself as an important member of the UK jazz scene…both as a player and a writer’. Pianist Deschanel Gordon was voted BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2020\, saxophonist George Crowley (who replaces Helena Kay) has been praised by The Guardian as a “fine young composer/player”\, while bassist Flo Moore is also a member of award-winning bands Ezra Collective and Nerija. The band’s debut album was named Editor’s Choice by Jazzwise Magazine. \nThe gig will start at 8.30 p.m and entry will be free\, although there will be a collection for the musicians during the evening. DESCRIPTION:THREEWAY AT THE BEAVER \nAn exciting combination of trumpet\, bass guitar and drums comes to North Devon Jazz Club at The Beaver\, Appledore on 18th November\, The band is called  Threeway and consists of three of the UK’s top jazz musicians\, led by bass guitarist Ben Crosland and completed by trumpeter Steve Waterman and pianist Steve Lodder. \nTo quote Dave Gelly in The Observer “The ensemble playing has the togetherness that only comes from top musicians who know each other well and think as one. Everything is clear and precise yet full of delicacy and feeling”…and Peter Vacher wrote in Jazzwise: “Crosland’s compositions are often quite captivating\, the reactions and interplay between Crosland\, Waterman and Lodder as near to perfection as anyone could want” \nBassist Ben Crosland is one of the North’s most experienced jazz musicians\, having been leading bands for over 30 years. He has worked as a sideman with many leading US and UK soloists including Jean Toussaint\, Ken Peplowski\, Harry Allen\, George Masso\, Henry Lowther\, Stan Sulzman\, Frank Ricotti and John Etheridge.     \nTrumpeter and flugel horn player Steve Waterman is an in-demand soloist both in UK and abroad. He has recorded and toured with John Surman’s Brass Project and the Carla Bley Big Band and has worked with a host of other artists including Vince Mendoza\, Tony Coe\, Mal Waldron and Colin Towns. He has recorded a series of critically acclaimed albums in his own name.  \nPianist Steve Lodder is a highly-regarded sideman for many international and British musicians including Andy Sheppard\, Nana Vasconcelos\, George Russell’s Living Time Orchestra\, Sarah Jane Morris\, John Harle\, Carla Bley and Monica Vasconcelos.
