They’ll be performing their madcap Scrumpy & Western music at the Palladium Club on Lower Gunstone\, supported by Somerset reggae-funk-hip-hop collective Monkey Bizzle.  \nThe gig will also be doubling up as a mini cider festival\, with real ciders on offer from local producers such as Green Man in Barnstaple. \nFor the uninitiated\, Skimmity Hitchers blend razor sharp parodies and original material with a raucous stage show and spontaneous audience interaction. DESCRIPTION:American singer Anita O’Day’s unique sound and swinging rhythmic sense put her in the upper echelon of jazz singers\, as skilful with ballads as with scatting and liberal interpretations of standard songs. \nAnita’s career spanned the late swing and bebop eras\, inspiring many singers who followed her. Bristol-based Lucy Moon is just one of these singers and on 29 April she will perform a tribute to the great lady with her quartet at North Devon Jazz Club in  The Beaver\, Appledore. DESCRIPTION:Veteran Jazz Maestro at the Beaver \nArt Themen has been a beloved character of the British jazz scene for sixty years\, famously combining his role as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with saxophone duties in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey among many others. This exciting\, playful and inventive saxophonist will appear with his Organ Trio at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 13 May. \nArt has travelled a long way musically. He was  involved in the Manchester traditional jazz scene in the 1950s\, then became  part of the London blues scene in the 1960s and went on to develop his present very characterful saxophone style which originally owed much to that of Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins but then came under such disparate influences as Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane. To quote Dave Gelly in The Observer “Themen is one of the very few totally original\, utterly engaging jazz musicians around’ and to quote London Jazz News ‘in any other country he’d be regarded as a national treasure.” \nJoining Art will be George Double on drums and Pete Whittaker on organ \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:Dave Storey has established himself as one of the leading drummers and first call sidemen on the London jazz scene. He is well known for his big sound on the drums and for his work as a bandleader. Dave will bring his star studded trio to North Devon Jazz Club at The Beaver\, Appledore on 10 June to play contemporary straight-ahead jazz marked by a high degree of interplay and understanding between the musicians\, a relationship developed through several years of playing and touring together.. To quote London Jazz News audiences can expect ‘ ‘Twisty trips around post-bop topography\, fuelled by high-octane virtuoso drumming’. \nJoining Dave will be two multi-ward winning musicians: saxophonist James Allsopp (‘perhaps the most gifted British saxophonist of his generation’ to quote Underscore Music Magazine ) and double bassist Conor Chaplin of whom UK Jazz News commented ‘He has a wonderful capacity to communicate the joy of having just landed on a new idea\, a texture\, line\, a rhythmic kick\, to produce endlessly the sound of surprise.’ \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:Julian Costello is a saxophonist praised by Jazz Views as a “tenor player of gentle authority\, full of passion\, lyricism and invention”. He will be demonstrating these qualities with his quartet at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 24 June. \nAt the gig Julian will be playing tenor and soprano saxophones and will be joined by other star musicians: pianist John Turville \, double bass player Andy Hamill and drummer Tom Hooper. They will be playing music from their recent well-received album entitled And The Birds Were Set Free. Reviewing the album Jazz in Europe described Julian as “a great sax lyricist\, telling his stories of life’s ups and downs with perfect alteration of tone to impart strength\, humour and even frailty.” \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:Pete Saunders played keyboards on Dexys Midnight Runner’s first album\, Searching for the Young Soul Rebels back in 1980. It was an album which shaped a generation and made the Guardian’s list of 100 best albums ever. He has played keyboards ever since\, in various ventures\, the most recent being Blues and Burlesque. \nSee Pete play solo at the Champ on July 5. It will be surprising and entertaining\, with a healthy dose of blues and jazz.

DESCRIPTION:Sophie Smiles is a talented pianist and bassist who lives in Westward Ho! She learnt to play from listening to the great New Orleans piano master Dr John and often gigs around Appledore. She plays honky tonk and Southern funk and blues\, always looking like she loves to play more than anything else. Her warmth and enthusiasm is catching. \nJim Crawford is one of the best-known musicians in the Appledore area. Originally from Lancashire\, he now resides in the heart of Appledore. Despite his great skill on the guitar\, he is a humble man who loves fishing with his dog for company. He has toured much of Europe and the States captivating audiences with his intimate folk/blues style. \nSoftly spoken\, Jim has for years has been revered among professional musicians as a consummate finger picker and slide guitarist. He also has a great voice that belies his appearance.
