DESCRIPTION:The joyful sounds of South African township jazz can be heard at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on Monday 8th January when South African-born pianist Philip Clouts brings his Sunsplash Quartet to play the gig.  \nThe band will perform a programme which features music from the greats of South Africa including Abdullah Ibrahim’s breakthrough hit ‘Mannenberg’\, Miriam Makeba’s ‘Click Song’ and tunes by Dudu Pukwana and Hugh Masakela. More information can be found at the Sunsplash website.  \nPhilip Clouts was born in Cape Town and has loved South African jazz from childhood. The music has influenced his own playing and composing in worldbeat jazz group Zubop and more recently in the Philip Clouts Quartet. To quote critic Alyn Shipton in Gramophone Magazine\, the band  ‘hits an authentic groove and holds it\, building successfully as Hugh Masakela or Abdullah Ibrahim’s bands do\, underpinned with a rhythmic firmness and drive that carries everything forward with zest.’  \nThe quartet will be completed by saxophonist Neil Maya\, bass player Marcus Vergette and drummer Coach York.  \nThis concert is presented by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:Singer Sara Colman and pianist Rebecca Nash will perform at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver in Appledore on 4 March with a collection of new songs and arrangements developed together during lockdown in 2020\, celebrating the joy of musical partnership\, friendship and collaboration. They will be supported by the fine  bass player\, Henrik Jensen. More about the duo can be found at  at saracolman.com/sara-colman-rebecca-nash-duo. \nBuilt on a foundation of jazz\, their songs straddle singer-songwriter\, folk and classical music with glimpses of early influences such as Joni Mitchell and British jazz pianist John Taylor. Commenting on the couple’s performances UK Vibe has praised “Colman’s exquisite vocals and Nash’s own penchant for blindingly beautiful chord structures….the resulting music is simply stunning.” \nSara Colman  has made numerous appearances at festivals including Cheltenham\, Manchester\, Mostly Jazz\, ReVoice\, Sligo\, and appeared as featured vocalist with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland at the BBC Prom Night at The Royal Albert Hall\, as well as being a much respected educator\, and working with some of the leading lights in British music including Laura Mvula and Mahalia.\nRebecca Nash is one of the most distinctive pianists in the UK\, and her Redefining Element 78 is one of the most exciting bands on the scene. She has performed at festivals including the EFG London Jazz Festival\, Cheltenham\, We Out Here and Love Supreme\, as well as recording a recent session for  BBC Radio 3’s J to Z. \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:Bideford is stocking up on cider ready for Friday 26th April when cult band Skimmity Hitchers roll their wagon into town. They’ll be performing their madcap Scrumpy & Western music at the Palladium Club on Lower Gunstone\, supported by Somerset reggae-funk-hip-hop collective Monkey Bizzle.  \nThe gig will also be doubling up as a mini cider festival\, with real ciders on offer from local producers such as Green Man in Barnstaple. \nFor the uninitiated\, Skimmity Hitchers blend razor sharp parodies and original material with a raucous stage show and spontaneous audience interaction.
