DESCRIPTION:TRIBUTE TO ‘TRANE \nThe Harry Dowell Quartet will be at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 2nd March to perform a tribute to the great saxophonist John Coltrane\, marking what in 2026 would have been Coltrane’s hundredth year. \nWorking in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career John Coltrane went on to pioneer the use of modes and was highly influential in the development of jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians\, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career\, Coltrane’s music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension\, as exemplified on his most acclaimed album A Love Supreme. \nExeter-based saxophonist Harry Dowell took up flute at an early age and then changed to saxophone in his teens.  He now concentrates on playing tenor and soprano saxophones and at the gig the quartet will explore the key compositions from the various periods of John Coltrane’s dynamic career. \nJoining Harry will be pianist Tom Ball\, bassist Kevin Sanders and drummer Josh Rose. The gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. Thank you NDJC. There is no entrance fee. A collection will be taken for the band. DESCRIPTION:SUPERB SAXOPHONIST AT THE BEAVER \nA quartet led by superb saxophonist/clarinetist Steve Buckley\, will perform at North Devon Jazz Club in the Beaver\, Appledore on 16 March. \nAn influential figure on the UK jazz scene\, Steve was a founder member of the pioneer bands Loose Tubes and Big Air. His travels in African countries and elsewhere have strongly influenced his music\, particularly through his membership of the Pan African Orchestra and Latin American bands\, and these influences will be strongly in evidence at The Beaver gig. \nAlso featuring in the band will be the talented pianist Will Butterworth. The fine rhythm team will be Marcus Vergette on bass and Jem Fatna on drums. \nNow living in Devon Steve has continued with  projects\, including playing with the legendary South African pianist Tete Mbambisa and with a re-united Loose Tubes. \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. The caller\, Sophie Randles-Dunkley\, is a popular local musician who has organised many a ceilidh. A talented Celtic band will be providing the jigs and reels. All are welcome. \nNo experience or innate dancing ability is required. The evening is guaranteed to be a hoot. For the ceilidh virgins amongst us\, a ceilidh involves the caller explaining a sequence of dance moves to a group of people who then dance along to the live music. Wonderful stuff!

DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL BAND AT THE BEAVER \nA band characterised by an international line-up and an unusual variety of instruments will perform at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 20th April. The Transatlantic Hot Club are made up of harpist Ben Creighton Griffiths\, bassist Ashley John Long  ( both from Wales)\,  violinist/vocalist Adrien Chevalier from New York and accordionist Jeremy Lohier from Corsica. \nThe band will play an exciting mix of swing classics\, Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli standards\, Corsican song and Latin Bossa Nova.  \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:JUST EAST OF JAZZ AT THE BEAVER \nAppearing at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 27th April will be  Just East of Jazz. Back in the 1990s the band pioneered the incorporation of East European and Middle Eastern musical influences in to jazz but has since developed a unique sound which seamlessly links composition and improvisation. To quote Jazzwise Magazine the band’s music is ‘a restlessly virtuosic display of exceptionally punchy rhythmic precision and tight but flighty improvisation”  while The Guardian wrote that the band is  ‘one of the more unusual world-jazz ensembles…the authority and energy of the group has been growing over the years\, and they have long been a vivacious proposition live.’ \nThe band will be at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 27th April. DESCRIPTION:The queens of banjopunk\, three Swedish sisters by the name of Baskery\, who’ve played music since they were old enough to hold an instrument. Baskery play a combination of classic ‘roots music and Americana’ with a twist of rule breaking punk turn this much loved style of music on it’s head. \nTheir sound oozes style and playfulness and has helped them accrue a number of plaudits and accolades. The first album\, “Fall Among Thieves” (2008) was recorded in Stockholm\, co-produced by Lasse Mårtén (Pink\, ‘Peter\, Bjorn and John’\, Kelly Clarkson\, Lykke Li\, Primal Scream ). It quickly established them as an act that people took seriously. In the years that followed they’ve released several albums and EPs working with the likes of Blackpete (Depeche Mode\, Joe Jackson\, Peter Fox)\, Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids\, J. Roddy Walston\, Wargirl) and were also signed by Dan McCarroll (President and A&R) to Warner Music. ”Coyote & Sirens” their most recent offering was released in October 2018\, produced and engineered by Andrew Dawson (Kanye West\, Rolling Stones\, f.u.n\, The Revivalists). \nOn the live scene Baskery are experienced in putting on a show. DESCRIPTION:Top drummer Tristan Mailliot will bring a superb quartet to The Beaver\, Appledore on 11th May to celebrate the music of the great  pianist/composer Chick Corea. Tristan will be joined by award-winning young saxophonist  Tom Ridout and two very accomplished musicians from the South West\, pianist Tom Ball and  bass player Jim Rentoul.  \nTogether The Tristan Mailliot Quartet will explore a selection of compositions by Chick Corea who  came to prominence in the late 1960s with Miles Davis and who  left a legacy of more than seventy albums  as leader and composer when he died in 2021.\nCovering the popular Latin-influenced classics such as Spain  and Armando’s Rhumba to the lesser known Morning Sprite\, the introspective Futures and the modal jazz of Humpty Dumpty and Snapshot\, the varied programme will also include some of Chick’s favourite standard ballads and  will reference all six decades of Chick Corea’s monumental musical legacy. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club.
