DESCRIPTION:TRIBUTE TO ‘TRANE \nThe Harry Dowell Quartet will be at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 2nd March to perform a tribute to the great saxophonist John Coltrane\, marking what in 2026 would have been Coltrane’s hundredth year. \nWorking in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career John Coltrane went on to pioneer the use of modes and was highly influential in the development of jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians\, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career\, Coltrane’s music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension\, as exemplified on his most acclaimed album A Love Supreme. \nExeter-based saxophonist Harry Dowell took up flute at an early age and then changed to saxophone in his teens.  He now concentrates on playing tenor and soprano saxophones and at the gig the quartet will explore the key compositions from the various periods of John Coltrane’s dynamic career. \nJoining Harry will be pianist Tom Ball\, bassist Kevin Sanders and drummer Josh Rose. DESCRIPTION:SOULFUL SINGER AT THE BEAVER \nSinger Sarah Harris will be next up at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore. Appearing on 16th February Sarah Harris will be joined by Drummer Ronnie Jones\, pianist Will Butterworth and bassist Marcus Vergette to form the Sarah Harris Quartet. \nAfter a successful performing career in Brighton\, including being a regular on the Brighton jazz scene\, Sarah moved to South Devon and is now making her mark in the south west. Sarah has also worked with nationally-recognised groups such as Urban Voices Collective and The Dap Kings (backing Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones). Sarah is Influenced by\, among others\, Jeff Buckley\, Etta James\,Carmen McRae and Aretha Franklin and she brings a fresh and soulful approach to jazz. \nPianist Will Butterworth has worked with many of the UK’s finest musicians\, has played on many albums as a side man and released five albums which have achieved critical acclaim. To quote All About Jazz Butterworth is ‘a musician of flair\, intelligence and a huge technical facility.’. \nDrummer Ronnie Jones has established a reputation as a highly original\, inventive drummer.\nAs well as his trio and quartet he plays in pianist John Horler’s Celebrating Bill Evans’ Trio which recently played three sold-out shows at Ronnie Scott’s Club. \nThe fine bass player Marcus Vergette is a stalwart of the south-west jazz scene. DESCRIPTION:MORE JAZZ MOOSIC AT THE BEAVER \nQOW Trio is a unique multi-generational band featuring young firebrand saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan\, British Jazz legend Spike Wells on drums\, and multi-genre bassist and bandleader Eddie Myer. The band will be next up at North Devon Jazz Club at The Beaver in Appledore on 2nd February \nThe trio initially got together through their mutual love of Sonny Rollins’ classic piano-less trios of the 1950s but soon found themselves expanding their repertoire to explore the rich and varied territory laid out by the great tradition of big-toned tenor players over the generations\, from Lester Young to Dewey Redman to Seamus Blake and Walter Smith III.\nSpike Wells was 22 when the great saxophonist Tubby Hayes chose him as his drummer\, and he played with him until his death in 1973. Later\, Spike  was part of the Ronnie Scott’s house band and backed Stan Getz and Roland Kirk\, among many others. Bass player Eddie Myers describes Spike’s playing as “so free and fearless. Telepathically responsive\, completely musical and … the embodiment of swing”. \nEddie praises the other fellow band member\, saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan\, as “a complete musician\, a master technician on his instrument”. \nTo quote All About Jazz “The trio keep everything loose and fun\, while keeping the quality of their exchanges and energy levels at a high pitch. Their fluency in melding tradition-grounded language with contemporary jazz\, together with sparkling spontaneity\, keeps the entertainment standard high.” The Jazz Mann says “The level of interaction between the three musicians involved in this fluid\, chordless instrumental line up is exceptional.”\n#\nThe gig is at 8:30 and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:TOP-FLIGHT JAZZ TRUMPETER AT THE BEAVER \nTop-flight trumpeter Bruce Adams is special guest at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 24 November. He will join superb saxophonist Martin Dale and quartet to perform an evening of fiery bop-based jazz. \nBorn in Glasgow Bruce Adams is a veteran of the UK jazz scene. Given a trumpet at 11 years he was performing his first gig within a few months. There followed a diverse career\, ranging from a winning appearance on Opportunity Knocks\, a spell in Canada\, work on the QE2 and gigs with big bands which led to him winning the best soloist prize in the BBC Big Band Competition. \nBruce has played all over the world with such jazz greats as Benny Carter\, Buddy Tate and Bob Wilbur and he has won the UK Top Trumpet prize three times. Writing in The Daily Telegraph critic Martin Gayford commented that “Adams performs with boppy zip and\, when appropriate\, a nice\, dirty low down feeling”. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. SUMMARY:Howl Quartet - presented by North Devon Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Taking its name and inspiration from an Alan Ginsberg poem entitled Howl\, the Howl Quartet will play  a gig at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver Appledore on 10th November. \nFormed in 2017 and led by the saxophonists Harry Brunt and Dan Smith the quartet emphasises storytelling through melodic composition and improvisation. Reviewing the band’s album Airglow UK Vibe called it a “diverse\, dynamic and richly rewarding listen’ and stated that ‘Airglow is a great example of how jazz in the 21st century is well and truly alive and kicking” while Jazzwise wrote “Often beguiling…an assured statement of identity from a band that has very much found its feet.”

DESCRIPTION:GRIPPING JAZZ AT THE BEAVER \nAward-winning saxophonist Alex Clarke joins up-and-coming pianist Eddie Gripper with his trio at North Devon Jazz in The Beaver on 3 November. \nAlex was winner at the age of twenty of the Rising Star category in the British Jazz Awards and has since pursued a career working with top musicians\, with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra\, Simon Spillett’s Big Band and the Ronnie Scott Jazz Orchestra as well as touring with her own quartet. \nPianist Eddie Gripper has received glowing reviews for his playing and compositions. He came to prominence with his superb album Home which was praised for its thoughtful and melodic compositions. DESCRIPTION:JOYFUL JAZZER AT BEAVER \nItalian alto and soprano sax player\, Tommaso Starace\, makes a welcome return with his trio to North Devon Jazz Club at The Beaver\, Appledore on 13 October. \n Tommaso has a sparkling\, joyful approach to his music\, a characteristic identified by Italian critic Vittorio Franchini\, writing that “his sax is filled with voices\, it sings of gaiety”’ while the Oxford Times commented “‘Anyone who has experienced a glissando of language on the streets of Italy will understand the utter exuberance with which Italian-born Starace attacks and runs with the language of music.” \nTommaso has worked with many top UK\, Italian and US jazz musicians\, including Billy Cobham and Dave Liebman. Following his love of film and photography he has worked with film composer Dario Marianelli to record music for a TV production of This Little Life and recorded an album interpreting the photographs of Italian photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin. To extend his talents\, Tommaso has recorded Bach’s Cello Suites on soprano saxophone in six UK churches. \n Joining  Tommaso will be Martin Jenkins on Hammond organ and Pip Harborn on drums and they will play a programme of standards and contemporary jazz. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club.
