They will be playing music from their recent well-received album entitled And The Birds Were Set Free. Reviewing the album Jazz in Europe described Julian as “a great sax lyricist\, telling his stories of life’s ups and downs with perfect alteration of tone to impart strength\, humour and even frailty.” \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. He is well known for his big sound on the drums and for his work as a bandleader. Dave will bring his star studded trio to North Devon Jazz Club at The Beaver\, Appledore on 10 June to play contemporary straight-ahead jazz marked by a high degree of interplay and understanding between the musicians\, a relationship developed through several years of playing and touring together.. To quote London Jazz News audiences can expect ‘ ‘Twisty trips around post-bop topography\, fuelled by high-octane virtuoso drumming’. \nJoining Dave will be two multi-ward winning musicians: saxophonist James Allsopp (‘perhaps the most gifted British saxophonist of his generation’ to quote Underscore Music Magazine ) and double bassist Conor Chaplin of whom UK Jazz News commented ‘He has a wonderful capacity to communicate the joy of having just landed on a new idea\, a texture\, line\, a rhythmic kick\, to produce endlessly the sound of surprise.’ \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:Veteran Jazz Maestro at the Beaver \nArt Themen has been a beloved character of the British jazz scene for sixty years\, famously combining his role as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with saxophone duties in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey among many others. This exciting\, playful and inventive saxophonist will appear with his Organ Trio at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 13 May. \nArt has travelled a long way musically. He was  involved in the Manchester traditional jazz scene in the 1950s\, then became  part of the London blues scene in the 1960s and went on to develop his present very characterful saxophone style which originally owed much to that of Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins but then came under such disparate influences as Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane. To quote Dave Gelly in The Observer “Themen is one of the very few totally original\, utterly engaging jazz musicians around’ and to quote London Jazz News ‘in any other country he’d be regarded as a national treasure.” \nJoining Art will be George Double on drums and Pete Whittaker on organ \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:American singer Anita O’Day’s unique sound and swinging rhythmic sense put her in the upper echelon of jazz singers\, as skilful with ballads as with scatting and liberal interpretations of standard songs. \nAnita’s career spanned the late swing and bebop eras\, inspiring many singers who followed her. Bristol-based Lucy Moon is just one of these singers and on 29 April she will perform a tribute to the great lady with her quartet at North Devon Jazz Club in  The Beaver\, Appledore. The musician is Karen Sharp who plays baritone as well as tenor saxophones and who will appear with the Craig Milverton Trio. \nA busy musician on the festival and club circuit\, Karen plays saxophone in a way which harks back to the effortless\, swinging styles of Zoot Sims or Al Cohn rather than the more impassioned approach of John Coltrane. Writing in The Observer the critic Dave Gelly described her sound as ‘warm and full\, her improvised lines bold and clear and her compositions full of surprises’ while Downbeat Magazine commented that ‘Sharp loves melody\, whether composed or improvised\, as reflected in her relaxed and natural phrasing” \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:Singer Sara Colman and pianist Rebecca Nash will perform at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver in Appledore on 4 March with a collection of new songs and arrangements developed together during lockdown in 2020\, celebrating the joy of musical partnership\, friendship and collaboration. They will be supported by the fine  bass player\, Henrik Jensen. More about the duo can be found at  at saracolman.com/sara-colman-rebecca-nash-duo. \nBuilt on a foundation of jazz\, their songs straddle singer-songwriter\, folk and classical music with glimpses of early influences such as Joni Mitchell and British jazz pianist John Taylor. Commenting on the couple’s performances UK Vibe has praised “Colman’s exquisite vocals and Nash’s own penchant for blindingly beautiful chord structures….the resulting music is simply stunning.” \nSara Colman  has made numerous appearances at festivals including Cheltenham\, Manchester\, Mostly Jazz\, ReVoice\, Sligo\, and appeared as featured vocalist with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland at the BBC Prom Night at The Royal Albert Hall\, as well as being a much respected educator\, and working with some of the leading lights in British music including Laura Mvula and Mahalia.\nRebecca Nash is one of the most distinctive pianists in the UK\, and her Redefining Element 78 is one of the most exciting bands on the scene.
