DESCRIPTION:WORLD-CLASS TRUMPETER AT THE BEAVER \nByron Wallen\, a musician described by Jazzwise Magazine as ‘one of the most innovative\, exciting and original trumpet players alive’\, will appear at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on Monday 1st September with the Craig Milverton Trio.\n Byron was born in to a musical family and after learning piano and euphonium at an early age he went to New York to study trumpet with such American  greats as Donald Byrd and Jimmy Owens. Byron then started a glowing musical career\, playing with Courtney Pine and Jean Toussaint and many American musicians\, including David Murray\, Billy Higgins\, Wynton Marsalis and George Benson.\nByron has visited many countries in the world to perform with local musicians\, especially in countries of Africa. As a writer he has composed scores for film and theatre and as an educator he holds several teaching posts including at London’s Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. DESCRIPTION:STAR TRIO AT THE BEAVER \nAward-winning double bass player Alec Dankworth\,  the son of  the late Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine\, will  join vibraphonist Roger Beaujolais and guitarist Neil Burns to perform a gig on 9th June at  North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore. \n As one of the UK’s leading bassists Alec has had an impressive career including  stints in the Dave Brubeck Quartet\, with Van Morrison  and with the notorious Ginger Baker of “Cream” fame\, among many other collaborations with many of the world’s greatest jazz musicians. He is also a prolific composer and bandleader in his own right. \nVibes player Roger Beaujolais is known for his long career as a jazz musician\, based in London and working internationally. Along with a string of high profile session work Roger has performed and recorded with many big names\, including Robert Plant\, Neneh Cherry\, Morrissey\, Paul Weller\, Roni Size\, Kirsty MacColl\, and Tony Allen as well as releasing many albums under his own leadership. \nScottish Guitarist Neil Burns has been immersed in the south west jazz scene for many years and has accompanied many top players on tours in the region. His a funky\, bluesy\, bebop style  is steeped in the jazz guitar tradition\, heavily influenced by the great Grant Green. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:MULTI-AWARD WINNING GUITARIST AT THE BEAVER \nOn 12 May top guitarist Jim Mullen will bring his organ trio to North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore to perform a programme of originals and carefully crafted jazz standards in a groove-influenced hard-bop style which Jim describes as a mixture of ‘tradition and transition’. To quote a review in The Guardian ‘Each piece gets a unique\, often surprising treatment\, performed with the understated virtuosity that marks out the best and most mature players.’ \nA multi-award winner\, including a special Honorary Parliamentary Jazz Award in 2017\, Jim Mullen is widely regarded as one of the finest jazz guitarists in Europe. Originally from Glasgow he made his name playing with a number of seminal bands through the seventies and eighties\, including Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express\, The Average White Band and his own highly acclaimed jazz/funk band Morrissey-Mullen with saxophonist Dick Morrissey. A prized sideman as well as leader Jim also includes work with the likes of Mose Allison\, Jimmy Witherspoon\, Clare Martin and Georgie Fame. \nJoining Jim will be Ross Stanley\, rated as one of the finest jazz organists on the scene\, and fine drummer Tristan Mailliot.  \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. Pioneering the bebop style alongside Charlie Parker\, Davis went on to record the most popular jazz record of all time\, Kind of Blue\, and continued being an artistic innovator throughout his life with a lasting impact on many musicians to this day. On 28th April trumpeter Sam Massey will join a trio at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore to perform pieces composed by Miles Davis\, such as  All Blues and  Stella by Starlight. \nDescribed by The Guardian as a ‘fine trumpet player’ Sam Massey has performed alongside top-class musicians from across the UK\, including the legendary Devon-based bandleader Mike Westbrook and Radio 2 favourite Clare Teal. As a performer\, arranger and composer\, he and his music have been broadcast on numerous BBC\, Jazz FM and RAI (Italy) programmes and Sam is found on critically acclaimed albums by artists such as American soul singer PP Arnold and ska band The Simmertones. \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:TRIBUTE TO OSCAR PETERSON AT BEAVER \nThe late\, great pianist Oscar Peterson will be the subject of a tribute evening when top UK pianist Craig Milverton performs with his trio at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on  17th March. \nCanadian-born Peterson\, who was born one hundred years ago\,  was the recipient of  eight  Grammy Awards and made over 200 recordings  in a 60 year career\, playing mainly in a trio setting. Influenced by such greats as Teddy Wilson\, James P. Johnson and particularly Art Tatum\, he was\, according to the singer/pianist Ray Charles\, the only pianist who ever came near to Tatum’s technical genius. \nCraig Milverton was awarded UK Jazz Pianist of the Year in 2010 and  is a regular member of Digby Fairweather’s band as well as featuring with many other top musicians. DESCRIPTION:BEYOND MACK THE KNIFE \nThe German-American composer Kurt Weill is famous for his song Mack the Knife but it is his lesser-known works\, straddling the worlds of jazz\, classical music\, musical theatre and opera\, which the prize-winning alto saxophonist Sam Braysher will interpret with his trio at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver on 17th February. \nSam’s playing  has been described as “delightful and surprising” by Dave Gelly in the Observer\, while his recent trio album was praised in Jazzwise as “a triumph of intelligence and sentiment”. DESCRIPTION:The late pianist Dave Brubeck was an enormously popular and influential figure who possibly did more than anyone to bring jazz in to the mainstream. DESCRIPTION:Out Front at The Beaver \nA  UK super group is next up at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver on 2nd December.  The band is called Out Front and was  formed to play the music of two of jazz’s greatest ‘inside-outside’ masters; Booker Little and Andrew Hill. Drawing on a wealth of fabulous compositions and featuring a rich line-up of three horns\, drums and bass\, the band explores the vast possibilities of this music\, from joyous straight ahead time playing\, to the most open of improvisation. \nLed by trumpeter Nick Malcolm the band also includes alto saxophonist Jason Yarde\, tenor saxophonist Jake McMurchie\, bass player Olie Brice and drummer Dave Smith. Nick Malcolm has been described as ‘a significant presence on the UK jazz scene’ by The JazzMann. He is a heartfelt improviser with a rich warm sound from his instrument. Jason Yarde is one of the UK’s top saxophonists who has\, according to The Guardian ’quietly blossomed to World Class’\, while fellow saxophonist Jake McMurchie is the key driving force behind the award-winning band Get The Blessing. Jazz writer Brian Morton commented that bassist Olie Brice ‘makes the entire body of his bass sing’ while drummer Dave Smith\, best known for his work with Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters\, exhibits\, according to the LA Times\, ‘a mastery of irresistible rhythms’.  \nThe gig is at 8:30 and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. He has worked as a sideman with many leading US and UK soloists including Jean Toussaint\, Ken Peplowski\, Harry Allen\, George Masso\, Henry Lowther\, Stan Sulzman\, Frank Ricotti and John Etheridge.     \nTrumpeter and flugel horn player Steve Waterman is an in-demand soloist both in UK and abroad. He has recorded and toured with John Surman’s Brass Project and the Carla Bley Big Band and has worked with a host of other artists including Vince Mendoza\, Tony Coe\, Mal Waldron and Colin Towns.
