At the gig the trio will perform numbers from their latest album\, Americana\, which was inspired by an epic journey Eddie did with a friend in 2022.\nThumbing lifts the two men travelled from the Arctic Circle through Alaska \, the Yukon and British Columbia\, then crossed the border into Washington\, Oregon\, California\, Nevada and Arizona before finally reaching Los Angeles. \nThe album is a personal account of that six week journey\, reflecting the American spirit\, the warmth\, optimism and generosity of its people but also a glimpse into a more fractured reality of drugs\, homelessness and poverty. \nJoining Eddie with be bass player Clem Saynor and drummer Patrick Barrett Donlon. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club.

DESCRIPTION:Top drummer Tristan Mailliot will bring a superb quartet to The Beaver\, Appledore on 11th May to celebrate the music of the great  pianist/composer Chick Corea. Tristan will be joined by award-winning young saxophonist  Tom Ridout and two very accomplished musicians from the South West\, pianist Tom Ball and  bass player Jim Rentoul.  \nTogether The Tristan Mailliot Quartet will explore a selection of compositions by Chick Corea who  came to prominence in the late 1960s with Miles Davis and who  left a legacy of more than seventy albums  as leader and composer when he died in 2021.\nCovering the popular Latin-influenced classics such as Spain  and Armando’s Rhumba to the lesser known Morning Sprite\, the introspective Futures and the modal jazz of Humpty Dumpty and Snapshot\, the varied programme will also include some of Chick’s favourite standard ballads and  will reference all six decades of Chick Corea’s monumental musical legacy. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:JUST EAST OF JAZZ AT THE BEAVER \nAppearing at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 27th April will be  Just East of Jazz. Back in the 1990s the band pioneered the incorporation of East European and Middle Eastern musical influences in to jazz but has since developed a unique sound which seamlessly links composition and improvisation. To quote Jazzwise Magazine the band’s music is ‘a restlessly virtuosic display of exceptionally punchy rhythmic precision and tight but flighty improvisation”  while The Guardian wrote that the band is  ‘one of the more unusual world-jazz ensembles…the authority and energy of the group has been growing over the years\, and they have long been a vivacious proposition live.’ \nThe band will be at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 27th April. DESCRIPTION:SUPERB SAXOPHONIST AT THE BEAVER \nA quartet led by superb saxophonist/clarinetist Steve Buckley\, will perform at North Devon Jazz Club in the Beaver\, Appledore on 16 March. \nAn influential figure on the UK jazz scene\, Steve was a founder member of the pioneer bands Loose Tubes and Big Air. His travels in African countries and elsewhere have strongly influenced his music\, particularly through his membership of the Pan African Orchestra and Latin American bands\, and these influences will be strongly in evidence at The Beaver gig. \nAlso featuring in the band will be the talented pianist Will Butterworth. The fine rhythm team will be Marcus Vergette on bass and Jem Fatna on drums. \nNow living in Devon Steve has continued with  projects\, including playing with the legendary South African pianist Tete Mbambisa and with a re-united Loose Tubes. \nThe gig is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:TRIBUTE TO ‘TRANE \nThe Harry Dowell Quartet will be at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 2nd March to perform a tribute to the great saxophonist John Coltrane\, marking what in 2026 would have been Coltrane’s hundredth year. \nWorking in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career John Coltrane went on to pioneer the use of modes and was highly influential in the development of jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians\, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career\, Coltrane’s music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension\, as exemplified on his most acclaimed album A Love Supreme. \nExeter-based saxophonist Harry Dowell took up flute at an early age and then changed to saxophone in his teens.  He now concentrates on playing tenor and soprano saxophones and at the gig the quartet will explore the key compositions from the various periods of John Coltrane’s dynamic career. \nJoining Harry will be pianist Tom Ball\, bassist Kevin Sanders and drummer Josh Rose. DESCRIPTION:SOULFUL SINGER AT THE BEAVER \nSinger Sarah Harris will be next up at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore. Appearing on 16th February Sarah Harris will be joined by Drummer Ronnie Jones\, pianist Will Butterworth and bassist Marcus Vergette to form the Sarah Harris Quartet. \nAfter a successful performing career in Brighton\, including being a regular on the Brighton jazz scene\, Sarah moved to South Devon and is now making her mark in the south west. Sarah has also worked with nationally-recognised groups such as Urban Voices Collective and The Dap Kings (backing Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones). Sarah is Influenced by\, among others\, Jeff Buckley\, Etta James\,Carmen McRae and Aretha Franklin and she brings a fresh and soulful approach to jazz. \nPianist Will Butterworth has worked with many of the UK’s finest musicians\, has played on many albums as a side man and released five albums which have achieved critical acclaim. To quote All About Jazz Butterworth is ‘a musician of flair\, intelligence and a huge technical facility.’. \nDrummer Ronnie Jones has established a reputation as a highly original\, inventive drummer.\nAs well as his trio and quartet he plays in pianist John Horler’s Celebrating Bill Evans’ Trio which recently played three sold-out shows at Ronnie Scott’s Club. \nThe fine bass player Marcus Vergette is a stalwart of the south-west jazz scene. He is also a distinguished sculptor\, having contributed the Time and Tide bell which is situated on the Churchfield’s slip in Appledore. \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:MORE JAZZ MOOSIC AT THE BEAVER \nQOW Trio is a unique multi-generational band featuring young firebrand saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan\, British Jazz legend Spike Wells on drums\, and multi-genre bassist and bandleader Eddie Myer. The band will be next up at North Devon Jazz Club at The Beaver in Appledore on 2nd February \nThe trio initially got together through their mutual love of Sonny Rollins’ classic piano-less trios of the 1950s but soon found themselves expanding their repertoire to explore the rich and varied territory laid out by the great tradition of big-toned tenor players over the generations\, from Lester Young to Dewey Redman to Seamus Blake and Walter Smith III.\nSpike Wells was 22 when the great saxophonist Tubby Hayes chose him as his drummer\, and he played with him until his death in 1973. Later\, Spike  was part of the Ronnie Scott’s house band and backed Stan Getz and Roland Kirk\, among many others. Bass player Eddie Myers describes Spike’s playing as “so free and fearless. Telepathically responsive\, completely musical and … the embodiment of swing”. \nEddie praises the other fellow band member\, saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan\, as “a complete musician\, a master technician on his instrument”. \nTo quote All About Jazz “The trio keep everything loose and fun\, while keeping the quality of their exchanges and energy levels at a high pitch. Their fluency in melding tradition-grounded language with contemporary jazz\, together with sparkling spontaneity\, keeps the entertainment standard high.” The Jazz Mann says “The level of interaction between the three musicians involved in this fluid\, chordless instrumental line up is exceptional.”\n#\nThe gig is at 8:30 and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club.
