The Seagate Hotel dates from the 18th century and has a beautiful bar and restaurant with large fireplaces and friendly staff. An excellent choice of beers, ciders and wines too.

The Seagate is currently owned by Young’s Brewery and offers quiz nights and, from time to time, live music in its ample bar area. It is also Appledore’s only hotel, and very comfortable it is too.

The Royal North Devon Golf Club lies alongside the beautiful beach at Northam Burrows, which stretches from Northam to Westward Ho! It is a few minutes’ drive, or 30 minutes walk, from Appledore. It can rightly claim to be the cradle of English Golf. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of the South. The golf course is as tough as any of the UK’s more famous links layouts and has recently been placed in Golf World ‘s “Top 100 Courses in the World” that a golfer must play.

The golf club has a restaurant which regularly hosts live music events. These are mainly dine and dance events.

The Royal Hotel is no longer a hotel but retains its historic name. It is located in the heart of old Appledore on the corner of two of the prettiest little streets, Bude Street and Market Street.

The Royal has a good selection of wines, spirits and real ales in their lovely, genuinely old bar. Sit back and sense the generations of fishermen, shipbuilders and sailors who have supped in the same surroundings.

Opposite is the fish and chip restaurant and takeaway ‘The Royal Plaice’ for traditional fish and chips in stylish, comfortable surroundings. You are welcome to take your fish and chips over to the pub or buy your drinks from the bar to enjoy with your meal in the restaurant.

The Beaver Inn plays live local up-beat music every Saturday. One Monday a month it hosts North Devon Jazz Club and every Sunday there’s the Marmalade Club, which is an open mike night. The Appledore social club is now closed, possibly for ever.

It was a friendly space that used to offer a fantastic range of music, with its own bar, dance floor and lighting. Unfortunately, the community interest company that ran the Social Club went into liquidation in 2023, brought down by losses accrued during the pandemic.

There is no information about whether the social club will reopen as a music venue or not. it is available for hire via the charitable trust that owns the building, via the Appledore Community Hall web site.
