Sea shanties are a vital part of Appledore’s history. Many of Appledore’s residents a hundred years ago worked on the fishing fleet or on ships transporting raw materials and finished goods along the Bristol Channel. There were numerous small shipyards too, reinforcing the links between Appledore and the sea. There is still an active fishing fleet, and it is wonderful that Applecorers continue the maritime tradition with their sea shanties and other songs of the sea.

Softly spoken, Jim has for years has been revered among professional musicians as a consummate finger picker and slide guitarist. He also has a great voice that belies his appearance.

He plays regularly at the Champ and the Social Club, and is frequently seen and heard at open mic nights and jam sessions around Appledore. Jim is a phenomenal blues guitarist whose left hand dances along the frets as if by magic.

Jim keeps a low profile. He was selling CDs through his own web site but that seems not to be around any more. Jim, if you’d like a link to it, contact us here. In the meantime, catch up with him at one of his blues open mic nights or his solo performances around Appledore.

Steve is a regular at open mic nights including Jim Crawford’s Wednesday night blues session at The Champ, and Baz Bix’s Marmalade Club at the Beaver Inn.

Steve also plays in Dual, a ska reggae duo he formed with friend and guitarist David Daccore. They perform regularly around Appledore, Bideford and the local area.

DOGLEG are Tracy on vocals, guitar and fiddle, and Steve on vocals and guitar. They are based in Bideford and for over nine years have been gigging across Devon and the South West. With such a wide ranging set list no two gigs are ever the same. dogleg play their own take on a wide range of covers and a growing number of own songs too.

Vidris Coda are a three piece band specialising in vocal harmonies and covering songs you know well but may not hear very often. The band is almost wholly acoustic (apart from the bass) and consists of Chris Lansdell-Snell – djembe, percussion and vocals, David Shepherd, bass, mandola, whistles and vocals and David C Snell, guitars, harmonicas and vocals.

Marsh & the Reluctant Friends are a locally based group that play original music, incluenced by americana, British folk and damn fine music generally.

The band were formed in 2020 and their leader, Paul, has gigged all over the world in previous bands. Marsh’s music is available at the web site marshsongs.com.
